Why We Brush-Apply Instead of Spraying
Spraying stain is faster, which is exactly why so many companies do it, but a sprayed coat mostly sits on top of the wood fibres instead of soaking into them. On a fence that faces a Kitchener-Waterloo winter, with freeze-thaw cycles that expand and contract the wood repeatedly, a surface coat is the first thing to crack and peel. The Stains We Use and Why
We work almost exclusively with premium, penetrating oil-based stains, primarily Ready Seal and Penofin Verde. Both are formulated to soak into wood fibres rather than form a plastic-like film, which is what lets them wear down evenly instead of peeling in sheets when they eventually need renewal. Water-based stains have improved over the years, but they still sit closer to the surface and tend to show wear faster on fences exposed to full sun, which describes most of the property-line fences we work on in this region.
Choosing a Finish
Fence stain comes in a range of opacities, and the right one depends on how much of the wood grain you want visible and how much colour control you want.
- Transparent: shows the most wood grain and natural character, with the least UV protection
- Semi-transparent: our most requested option, balancing visible grain with solid colour and good UV protection
- Semi-solid: more colour coverage while still showing some texture underneath
- Solid: full opaque colour, closer to a paint-like finish while still penetrating the wood
Cedar vs Pressure-Treated Fences
Cedar and pressure-treated wood behave differently under stain, and we treat them accordingly. Cedar has a tighter, more consistent grain and generally accepts stain evenly with a shorter dry-out period, which is one reason it is a popular upgrade choice for new fence sections. Pressure-treated wood needs more time to off-gas moisture from the treatment process, particularly on newer installations, before stain will penetrate properly. We assess the wood on site and adjust the timeline and prep, including an 80-grit buff sand where needed, so the stain has the best chance of adhering fully rather than sitting on a surface that is not ready for it.
How Long Fence Staining Takes
Most fence staining projects in Kitchener-Waterloo take about two days from start to finish, including cleaning, drying time, and two coats of stain. Larger properties or fences requiring more prep work can run closer to three days. We plan around the weather rather than rush a coat onto wood that has not had time to dry, since stain applied to a damp surface will not cure properly.
Weather Windows and Timing Your Project
Stain needs a dry surface and dry conditions to cure properly, which means Southwestern Ontario's shoulder seasons take some planning around. Spring brings frequent rain through April and into May, and fall can turn damp quickly once October arrives, so we watch the forecast closely and schedule staining jobs for stretches with at least a day or two of dry weather on either side of application. Summer generally offers the most reliable window, though very hot, direct sun can cause stain to dry too fast on the surface before it has fully penetrated, so we often time application for morning or early evening on the hottest days. None of this is guesswork on our end. It is part of how we plan every fence staining job from the first phone call.
How Often to Re-Stain a Fence
A properly brush-applied oil-based stain on a Kitchener-Waterloo fence typically holds up for five to six years before it needs a fresh coat, though south- and west-facing fences with more direct sun exposure may show fading sooner. Watching for the wood turning grey again, water no longer beading on the surface, or visible dryness are the clearest signs it is time to book another round.
