What Sealing Services Covers
Sealing is the umbrella under which most of our finishing work sits, and it covers five related services that all share the same underlying philosophy: proper prep, brush application, and premium oil-based products. On decks, that means /deck-sanding for surfaces that need it, /deck-staining for colour and grain protection, and /deck-sealing for water and UV resistance. On fences, it means /fence-staining for a natural wood look and /fence-painting for full opaque colour. Whichever combination your project needs, the process starts the same way: a clean, dry, properly prepared surface.
Why Brush Application Beats Spraying
Spray application is faster and it is common across the industry, but it mostly deposits stain on top of the wood fibres rather than working it into the grain. Restore My Deck brush-applies every stain and sealer, which takes more time on site but forces the product deeper into the wood. That difference matters most once winter arrives. A sprayed coat that sits on the surface is far more likely to crack and peel through freeze-thaw cycles, while a brushed, penetrating coat wears down gradually and evenly, which is why our finished decks and fences fade gracefully instead of flaking.
The Products We Use
We work primarily with Ready Seal and Penofin Verde, two premium oil-based stains known for deep penetration and long-term performance rather than a quick surface sheen. Both hold up well to the humidity swings and UV exposure typical of Southwestern Ontario summers, and both are available across the full range of finish options.
- Transparent: maximum grain visibility, lightest protection
- Semi-transparent: the most requested option, balancing colour and visible wood grain
- Semi-solid: heavier colour with some texture still showing through
- Solid: full opaque colour with a paint-like finish while still penetrating the wood
Pressure-Treated vs Cedar: Different Timelines
Pressure-treated lumber and cedar do not behave identically under stain, so we adjust our process to the wood in front of us rather than run one script for everything. Pressure-treated wood typically needs more time to dry out after installation or after cleaning before stain will penetrate properly, and often benefits from a light buff sand to open the surface. Cedar tends to accept stain sooner and more evenly given its tighter grain, though it still needs to be fully clean and dry first. We assess the wood on site and time the project accordingly instead of guessing.
Sanding: When It Is Worth It
Not every deck needs sanding before staining, but decks with rough, splintering boards or previous peeling paint or stain usually do. An 80-grit buff sand levels the surface and opens the wood grain so the new stain penetrates evenly rather than pooling in low spots or skipping over glossy patches left by an old finish. We evaluate this during the initial assessment, since sanding adds time and cost that is not necessary on every project.
Weather and Scheduling Around Southwestern Ontario Seasons
Stain and sealer both need a dry surface and dry weather to cure the way they are designed to, which means our scheduling leans heavily on the forecast rather than a fixed calendar. Spring in this region often stays wet into May, and fall can turn damp again by mid-October, so the reliable window for most projects runs from late May through September. Within that window we still watch daily conditions closely, since a coat applied ahead of overnight rain or during a stretch of high humidity will not cure the same way as one applied during a clear, moderate week. This is part of why we quote a project window rather than a fixed date until we are closer to the work.
How Often to Re-Seal or Re-Stain
A well-maintained deck or fence in the Kitchener-Waterloo area typically needs a fresh coat of stain or sealer every two to four years, while a full restoration involving sanding and repair is more commonly needed every five to seven years. Watching for water no longer beading on the surface, fading colour, or the wood starting to grey again are the clearest signs a re-stain is due sooner rather than later.
