The goal is to lift dirt, algae, grease and old stain off the surface without driving water into the grain or tearing up soft fibres, which is a real risk on decks built with pressure-treated pine, the most common decking material across Kitchener-Waterloo backyards.
Why pressure-treated pine needs extra care
Pressure-treated pine is manufactured to resist rot and insects, but that treatment process leaves the wood relatively soft compared to cedar or hardwood decking. Under too much pressure, a washer can leave visible striping, raise the grain unevenly or blow small chunks of fibre right off the board. Because so many decks in this region are built with pressure-treated pine, we default to a gentler setting and lean on our wood cleaners to do more of the work chemically rather than mechanically, which gets the same clean result without the risk of surface damage.
The role of wood brighteners
After washing, we apply a wood brightener, sometimes called a wood conditioner, to the deck. Cleaning solutions and hard water can leave wood slightly alkaline, which dulls its natural colour and can interfere with how evenly a stain absorbs afterward. A brightener neutralizes that pH, restores the wood's natural tone, and opens the grain slightly so whatever finish goes on next penetrates more evenly. This step is easy to skip and easy to notice when it has been skipped, since decks that go straight from washing to staining without a brightener often end up blotchy.

A properly power washed and brightened deck absorbs stain or sealant far more evenly than one that has simply been rinsed off. Washing right before winter can also be worthwhile on its own, since it clears away a season's worth of buildup and gives the deck a cleaner surface heading into months where it will not see much maintenance.
